Online Driver Education

DMV-approved 30-hour course. Self‑paced from home.

Abba Driving School's online Driver Education is a DMV-approved 30-hour course you can complete entirely from home. The program covers the same curriculum as our in-person classes: traffic laws, road signs, safe driving principles, and everything Virginia requires before you can get your learner's permit.

Online driver education is open to all students. Teens, adults, homeschool families, public school students, and private school students can all enroll. You work at your own pace through the course modules, take quizzes along the way, and earn your Driver Education certificate when you finish. For families in Planning District 8 (Prince William County, Manassas, Manassas Park), there is a required in-person parent/teen component that Abba includes as part of the program.

If you prefer a structured classroom setting with a live instructor, we also offer in-person Driver Education at our Haymarket office. Both formats satisfy the same Virginia DMV requirements, so it comes down to how you learn best.

How Online Driver Education Works

The online course is straightforward. Here's the process from start to finish:

  1. Register and get access. Sign up through our registration form below or call (703) 754-4444. You'll receive login credentials to start the course.
  2. Complete the modules at your own pace. The 30-hour curriculum is divided into chapters covering traffic laws, road signs, vehicle operation, driving hazards, and more. You can log in and out as needed, picking up where you left off each time.
  3. Pass chapter quizzes. Each chapter has a quiz you must pass before moving on. This makes sure you actually absorb the material rather than just clicking through slides.
  4. Take the final exam. After finishing all chapters, you complete a final exam covering the full curriculum.
  5. Receive your certificate. Once you pass, Abba Driving School issues your Driver Education certificate. Teens can use it to apply for their Virginia learner's permit. Adults can use it to waive the 60-day permit holding period and the DMV road test.

Families in Planning District 8 will schedule the required in-person parent/teen component separately. We handle this at our Haymarket office and include it at no extra cost.

What's Included in the Online Course

The online Driver Education course covers the full 30-hour Virginia DMV curriculum. Here is what you'll study:

  • Virginia traffic laws and administrative rules including speed limits, right-of-way, and driver-condition laws
  • Signs, signals, and pavement markings covering regulatory signs, warning signs, guide signs, and traffic control devices
  • Vehicle systems and pre-driving checks from comfort and control systems to safety inspections
  • Basic driving maneuvers such as turns, parking, passing, and lane changes
  • Searching, scanning, and hazard recognition using sight, sound, and spatial awareness
  • Driving in different environments including residential streets, highways, rural roads, and intersections
  • Weather and emergency situations covering night driving, rain, snow, skids, and vehicle breakdowns
  • Impaired and distracted driving including the effects of alcohol, drugs, fatigue, and phone use
  • Vehicle maintenance including brakes, tires, suspension, and child safety seats

Practice quizzes after each chapter help reinforce what you've learned. The final exam tests your knowledge of the complete curriculum.

Online vs. In-Person Driver Education

Both formats cover the same 30-hour DMV-approved curriculum and result in the same certificate. The main difference is how you experience the material.

Online is self-paced. You work through modules on your computer whenever it fits your schedule. There's no set class time, and you can spread the course over days or weeks. This works well for students with busy schedules, athletes, or anyone who prefers studying independently.

In-person is instructor-led. You attend scheduled classes at our Haymarket office with a live teacher. You can ask questions in real time, learn alongside other students, and stay on a structured timeline.

Abba offers both options because different students learn differently. Neither format is better than the other. Both meet Virginia requirements, and both prepare you for the same next step: getting your learner's permit and moving on to behind the wheel training.

Who Should Take Online Driver Education

Online driver education is a good fit for:

  • Students with packed schedules. Athletes, students with after-school activities, and families juggling multiple commitments benefit from the flexibility of logging in whenever they have time.
  • Self-motivated learners. If you do well studying on your own and don't need the structure of a scheduled class, online is a natural choice.
  • Students who live farther from Haymarket. Families in Warrenton, Fauquier County, or other parts of Northern Virginia can skip the commute to our office for the classroom portion.
  • Homeschool students. Online driver education integrates well with a homeschool schedule. See our homeschool driver education guide for specific requirements.
  • Adults who want to waive the 60-day wait. If you're 18 or older and getting your first Virginia license, completing driver education (online or in-person) waives both the 60-day permit holding period and the DMV road test. Online lets you do it on your own time. Read more in our guide for adult students.

Pricing and Registration

Online Driver Education is $200. That includes the full 30-hour course, all quizzes and exams, and your Driver Education certificate. For families in Planning District 8, the in-person parent/teen component is included at no additional charge.

After you register for the online course, you will receive an email with everything you need to start.

Online Driver Education FAQ

Is online driver education DMV-approved?

Yes. Abba Driving School's online Driver Education program is approved by the Virginia DMV. You receive the same certificate as our in-person students, and it satisfies all Virginia requirements for driver education.

How long does online driver education take?

The course is 30 hours of instruction. Since it's self-paced, how quickly you finish depends on your schedule. Some students complete it in a couple of weeks. Others spread it over a month or more. You can log in and out as many times as you need.

Do I still need behind the wheel after online driver education?

Yes. Driver education (online or in-person) covers the classroom theory portion only. Teens under 18 still need to complete behind the wheel training with a DMV-certified instructor before getting their license. Adults who complete driver education can skip the DMV road test, but many still choose behind the wheel for the hands-on practice.

Can public school students take online driver education?

Yes. Abba Driving School's online Driver Education is open to all students, including those enrolled in public schools, private schools, and homeschool programs.

What happens after I finish online driver education?

After passing the final exam, Abba issues your Driver Education certificate. Teens use this certificate (along with other required documents) to apply for their Virginia learner's permit at the DMV. Adults use it to waive the 60-day permit holding period and the road skills test. The next step after that is behind the wheel training.

Is there a parent/teen component?

For families in Planning District 8 (Prince William County, Manassas, Manassas Park), Virginia requires an in-person parent/teen meeting as part of driver education. This applies whether you take the course online or in person. Abba includes this component at no extra cost, and we schedule it at our Haymarket office.
